Fresh Blanket - Browns Creek - 24" x 26" - Oil on Linen - 2011

This is a painting that has been worked on and off since Thanksgiving and finished today. This is actually closer to my home then I can hit a golf ball with a driver, not saying much....... But it is a natural trout stream that has a meandering likeness that flows about 3 miles to the east to the mighty St. Croix. Man I love living in the St. Criox River Valley!

All within the past four to five weeks.... I have been pushing deadlines and really pushing my self in a good direction, especially after the late fall I had! This is a rework from a previous coat of paint that yielded some weird paint application marks my thoughts are from the alkyd medium on the Alkyd primer - some reaction of some sort, but I have seen this on some Utrecht stuff I bought along time back and this roll which I love but its not right....... But with out further r' due........

I have been working like mad on ideas and broadening my ideals of my art and where I want to push it and what I want to say, really working on trying some tonal and cerebral painting as I call them. I have been studying many artist in this realm of the past and present, Emil Carlsen is one of more favorite sources of research as of the late, as well as John Henry Twatchman, Scott Christensen, and for the compositional elements of T. Allen Lawson, as well as the work of Tom Maakestad, and Andrew Wykes. I have found that the more I research and study the more I become inthralled in learning and searching, and developing

I have been working on slowing the pace of my art, I have always been too impatient, materials are expensive and the time I have is limited and want to use it resourcefully, that means never rushing to paint to paintings sake. I am always ready paint! I just want to think more of images and what to do with them, I want to work large and simple but powerful and how to do that is tricky, look to the ones I have mentioned above and they make it look easy, but as I have read in the past it never is(was) easy for them.

More as this develops, and giving some insight to where I have been lately!!!!!! Please stay tuned as I will be trying to update the latter journey if it goes where I want and need it too!

This image is derived from thought, memory and ideas from a field I worked Cooper - my German Shorthair Pointer. He is the name of my OPA Eastern Regional SHow painting as well, a mascot and or inspiration of sorts.

I have been a nitro junkie of materials for many years and always looking at ways of expanding and seraching. I will list my likings below to maybe spark some interests....

Supports

Linen - I use and love NYC Central Art Supplies House linen's especially DP 301!
Boards - Rockler Wood Working Supply Baltic Birch
Raw premium cotton canvas and belgian linens
At times Claessens but usually NEVER - too slippery and it works with some things for me....
Shellac cover matboard mounted to foam core
gessoed Rives BFK printmaking paper.

Primers

Williamsburg - Titanium Oil Primer
Flake White to double prime an alkyd primer if seeking a certain effect....
Acrylic polymer Gesso, with marble dust, pumice and chalk for boards only
Shellac
Sherwin Williams Alkyd Primer Professional Series to double coat - love the way it accepts paint! and the look as it dries

Palette

Cad Red Lgiht
Alizarin Crimson
Cad Yellow Lemon and Deep
Ultramarine Deep
Naples Yellow (as dead grass modifier)
Cobalt Blue very rarely

and Titanium White

Most of these paints are mostly being purchased through a great paint source I have recently found RGH Artist Oil Paints. Jars of really concentrated pigment paints!

I do buy tubes of Auxiliary colors that I add and subtract......

I am very much in search of a universal titanium white I can use at all times, it never works out! I am very found of LeFranc, Rembrandt (stiff), Flake White Replacement (I know most dont like this one...) and Utrecht White. I have put Leads to use yet and scarred about toxicity and such......

Mediums

M. Graham - Alkyd/Walnut medium
Liquin for oiling out....
Schmincke Mal Butter
A traditional stand oil, OMS recipe works too....
beeswax mediums

Brushes

Utrecht #209 Brights and Flats for size 2 to 12
Robert Simmons Signet as well.
Blick at times but the bristles release too often and I take good care of my brushes

I hope this helps on some fronts of the materials world for others looking in at times, I feel it helps to see other ideas as well!

Also to add I stretch, mount, panel build/cradle and make almost all my painting surfaces, I take pride in creating my works of art the materials and time put into them, I only wish I could have a huge run of space to prime my own linens, but that'll come later..... Sorry to rant but I like to with some info!

This is the second one I was talking of. Sisseton, SD is a favorite place of mine and used to spend a lot of time pheasant hunting there in the past. This the bottom part of the thing below. I hand primed a sheet of canvas a few months back and thought I wanted to panoramic with these two paintings and here they are...

This is about 85% done just wanted to show I have been painting still.....

This is the 6 layer of paint now. It really started warm, then cool then in between then back to warm in the sky. This is a view I noticed early last week, I took a look and noticed the cools and the warms bouncing off each other and really liked the strong natural composition and got home skipped all things and went right into the drawing part of this to get fresh idea flushed out and ready for the next layer and with 2 hours for time to time here I am...

Variations on a theme of a favorite haunt of mine - where I went to college and spent alot of my free time these two paintings are very similar and very different as well, just showing where when I start painting and develop these images I go in directions that were never planned and getting sucess with it is what drives me forward. These are paintings developed in many layers. In fact i am working on a painting right now that has many levels, of very thin darks and very thick lights and the play on the two are making for some results I haven't come to yet in my painting time, really like the way this is going!!!!!!
